During the 1980’s I had the opportunity to visit Eritrea with the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front.
It was a real honour, first representing the Labour Party and then the BBC. During these visits I was given these wonderful photographs, showing what the Eritrean fighers were capable of.
I am not sure who took them, but I would love to find out.

But Martin, I bet you didn’t get to drive a T55 tank! It was an extraordinary time – a heroic, yet fragile people – the struggles they had and still have. I suppose this is why those of us who were there, who remember, feel such heartache for what has evolved. We were so sure Eritrea would be different.
The first picture is truly epic, it’s almost a summary of the entire struggle. Thanks for sharing!
