In the far north of Chad, close to the Libyan border, the Ennedi desert is full of marvellous, wind-sculpted stone structures like this – the Aloba Arch, one of the biggest natural arches in the world, with an approximate height of 120 meters (394 feet).

The eighteen Lakes of Ounianga are kept fresh by an underground aquifer – one of the few such systems in the world.

And the area is littered with rock art – carved into the caves and cliffs of the Ennedi Massif – a testament to its ancient occupation.
