Rio has not been a great success for African athletes.

There have been some wonderful individual performances, like Ethiopia’s Almaz Ayana smashing the world record by over 14 seconds to win Olympic gold in the women’s 10,000m.

But great running nations of the past – like the Kenyans – have been dogged by allegations of doping.

The result is a medals table which is, to put it mildly, disappointing. At the moment Africa’s performance is worse than it was in London in 2012.

We should not forget the performance of great African expats, like Mo Farah, but this is not good enough.

So come on Africa! Let’s see more medals!
